Is Divorce Mediation the Best Choice For You?

Created with GIMP

Divorce is never an easy thing to go through. Even if you and your spouse have reached an agreement on the terms of a divorce, it is still an unpleasant process. There are times when you will feel like you’re losing the life you built together and times when you feel like you can finally move on. Getting through the divorce process is hard without professional help. One option is to use mediation services.

What is Divorce Mediation?

Getting divorced can be a stressful process and a lot of hurtful words may be said. It involves getting rid of assets, negotiating parenting plans and distributing leftover assets. This is where mediation can help. Instead of hashing these parts of divorce out in a cold, uninviting courtroom, mediation will take place privately with a neutral mediator to guide you both through the divorce process.

You, your spouse and the mediator will meet at the beginning of the process to set the stage for the rest of the sessions. Your mediator will then lay out the rules and invite both parties to express themselves. After the initial meeting, the mediator may set up times to have individual meetings separately and more joint sessions until all issues in the divorce are solved.

Regardless of the type of session, your goal is to have a place where you can express yourself and talk about issues. This will allow you to explore ways to resolve disputes. Mediation allows both sides to determine what is important in the divorce instead of allowing a lawyer or judge to decide for you.

When there are children involved, it can be difficult to come up with a parenting plan. Having a mediator helps both parties come to an agreement on this issue in a way that works for both parents and the children. We want to help parents find a way to remain strong as a family unit, even after divorce.
